I have never purposely used props but I decided to today. Katie wasn't the least bit interested in me because the neighbors dogs were barking. She was focused.
ISO200, 50mm, f/2.5, 1/250
I tried Mark's approach of bumping up the contrast and this is the outcome.
Does it need more or less? I thought if I went a little more it was to much.
When I originally cropped the picture, I tried the rule of thirds with the two lines meeting her left eye. This time I cropped her right eye. Can you tell a difference?
What do you think?

Try bumping up the contrast a little bit and doing a rule of thirds crop where the upper right cross passes right between her eyes.
Personally I like the first one, just because she seems more focused. However, I know NOTHING about photography so just know that I am impressed with all your pictures!!
I like the bottom one better. They are both nice, though.
